# IoT Security

Plan cellular IoT security across SIM identity, network access, application transport, credentials, and connectivity management.

Cellular IoT security protects the connection between a device, the mobile network, and the application receiving its data. A SIM supplies the subscription identity used for network access; device security, application authentication, and data protection need their own configuration.

Use this guide when planning a Kilo Connectivity deployment to identify the controls your project requires. Confirm which network and SIM security options are included in your service, then configure the receiving application as well. Cellular connectivity alone does not guarantee end-to-end encryption or secure stored data.

### End-to-End Data Protection

Map the complete data path from the device to the receiving application. Confirm whether the connectivity service uses public routing, private network routing, or an optional VPN or cloud connection. Use the application's supported encrypted transport and configure protection for stored data separately.

### Intelligent Threat Detection

Define which changes in SIM usage, connection behavior, or application traffic require investigation. Confirm the monitoring and notification options available with your service, who receives those notifications, and what response they should take.

### Secure SIM Technology

#### Device Authentication and Binding

Keep a record of which SIM belongs to each device. If restricting a SIM to specific hardware is required, confirm that the service offers device binding and understand how replacement hardware is authorized.

#### SIM as the Root of Trust

A hardware root of trust protects cryptographic identity inside a device component. Some SIM-based designs can provide application-security functions in addition to mobile-network authentication. Verify the specific SIM, modem, provisioning process, and service support before relying on that design; it is not an automatic property of every IoT SIM.

### Core Network Security

Discuss network-level protections and incident handling with the connectivity provider. Distinguish controls operated by the network from actions your team must take on the device or receiving application.

### Secure SIM Management Platform

Limit management access to the people and integrations that need it. Review how credentials are stored and revoked, which actions each account can perform, and what activity records are available. Plan how to suspend or replace connectivity if a device or credential is compromised.

### Penetration Testing & Validation

Validate the controls used by your particular deployment, including the modem configuration, application connection, and management access. Request applicable security and testing information for the selected service. A connectivity subscription is one component of the system; assess it alongside the device and application.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.kiloiot.io/iot-security.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
