# Shared security responsibilities

See which security tasks belong to Kilo and which belong to your organisation or a customer-run installation.

Kilo operates and protects the hosted platform. Your organisation decides who may use its account, manages its devices and local networks, and determines why information is collected and used.

| Area                             | Kilo's responsibility                                                                            | Your organisation's responsibility                                                 |
| -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Hosted platform | Application operation, platform access controls, configuration and service recovery arrangements | Choose account members and permissions; protect individual credentials |
| Devices and local networks | Explain the supported connection and platform configuration | Maintain equipment and local connectivity; protect device credentials |
| Integrations and AI applications | Operate Kilo's integration functions | Review the access and information shared with each connected service |
| Alerts | Operate the platform's alerting functions | Test the delivery route, name the person who will act and plan for missed delivery |
| Customer-run installations | Supply the relevant product instructions | Maintain the host, installation, local access and recovery arrangements |

Start with the [Customer security guide](/customer-security-guide.md). Confirm any specific recovery, export, processing or contractual requirements for your deployment. This division of tasks does not transfer Kilo's own legal or service obligations to customers.

When someone leaves or a credential is exposed, remove the affected access and [report the problem](/incident-response-and-vulnerability-reporting.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.kiloiot.io/shared-responsibility.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
